Prime Time

So, my 35mm 1.8 came in today.  I’m pretty excited.  This is a super cheap, super sharp, super fast Nikon lens.  I got it so that i’d have something nice to use on my d300s since it’s a dx camera, for situations where i want to keep my really expensive stuff out of harms way.  I thought i’d try slapping it on my d700 fx just out of curiosity and i was pretty amazed.  If this lens wasn’t branded DX i’d barely notice!  This has gotta be Nikon’s best kept secret seeing as how the FX 35mm lens is roughly 15x more expensive!  This is my 3rd prime lens.  First was my 8mm bower (fisheye I Love it!), then theres the 50mm 1.2, witch sadly i have never used, and now my 35mm.  Hopefully i will get some usage this weekend.

Never To Be Seen Again
Here’s something i’ve been messing with.  I still don’t know how i feel about this shot.  I don’t really have a photographic eye for scenery.  I’ve done a few landscapes lately,  they usually get erased the same day.  This one may have shared a similar fate but i decided to put it up here instead, just for a look.

The D-70
My first digital camera was the Nikon D-70.  I really wasn’t getting along well with film, i live the instant gratification you get with digital.  This is from a shoot we did one day after class, no lights, no expensive glass, just shooting around in the Fed Ex field parking lot.  I wanted to get a good panning shot and capture the car in motion.  The backdrop of the stadium was perfect and this was the best shot of the day.
The car in the photo was my buddies old 240sx, we did a Speed Channel style restore on this car, it was junk when he got it.  we spent a few months gutting it and replacing EVERYTHING, we also swapped in an SR20det motor.  Good memories…

ARCHIVE WEDNESDAYS
Ok, so i’m going to start something, every WED, i’m going to tell a little about an old photo of mine, some of them have neat stories, so i’ll share them a bit.
For my first photo, this is one of a set that i did at the National harbor in Maryland.  What’s unique about these photos is the glowing effect around all of the bright lighting.  How did i do it?  Well, it was one of the strangest things i had ever seen, it wasn’t rain, it was like a constant light mist from a spray bottle,  it did this all day, forming tiny water droplets on everything,  it was a totally different look from typical raindrops.  I had to go out and shoot around.  I went out with my good friend Eddie to get a few good shots.  The mist was getting everything wet, including our cameras and lenses, it got to the point where we couldn’t keep them very dry any more so we packed up and went home.  During the shoot, we tried getting some of the water off the lenses but droplets just kept building up,  so the effect that you see in these photos is actually from the water running down the front of my lens.  Neat huh?  check out the full set here.

STROBIST TIME!!!!
I have finally stopped making excuses and  taken my strobes outdoors!  My biggest fear was that wind would blow my lights over, and once you drop them, they are done for.  Flashes are very fragile!  Once i got on location it was VERY windy, however, the wind wasn’t an issue at all.  Once i got the camera dialed in, the shots that came out were pretty nice.  It’s still a bit crude compared to what i’ve seen, but it will get better in time. check out the full gallery at http://sgphoto09.smugmug.com/Automotive/BMW-at-the-beach/22200933_TbDQZG#!i=1772924263&k=JK7pjtt

The Old Sheldon Church Ruins I spotted this place months ago, I finally took the time to go back and check it out. It’t quite a scenic area, the trees provide a nice canopy, there’s no vegetation, and the ruins and historic grave sites would provide an awesome backdrop for a photo shoot. Can someone please get engaged so i can put this location to use!

PHOTOSHOP:
I’m not a master of PS, im still learning, i kind of went wild on this one, i think the end result was pretty nice.  there’s another edit of the same shot on my Flickr, i didn’t like that one too much, i left it up though.  Pretty much all i did to this shot was convert it to B&W in color effects pro, then i sent it over to PS and added in the lens flare for fun.  I liked it, the last think i did was send it back to Lightroom and turn up the color temp just a bit.  This pic was taken with my 17-35 @ 17mm.  There just isn’t a better lens out there to shoot cars with.

I’m Extatic!  I finally decided to order Dustin Diaz’s book.  He’s one of my all time favorite photographers.  Pretty much everything you need to know to get started, and get better is in here!  He explains all the types of gear you can use, how to make great photos with the bare minimum, and some pretty crazy all out stuff.  I can’t wait to give it a try.  I highly recommend this reading to anyone who owns a camera flash.
